Adell Ryan: Author Spotlight

I have had the opportunity to interview yet ANOTHER amazing author ❤ Adell Ryan’s book Perfect in Her Reverse Genus series was one of my first few books I read in the reverse harem genre. I loved it so much that it became an obsession. I have read this book so many times ❤ Book 2, Broken, and Book 3, Resistant, are even more freaking amazing. Her writing is soooooo good. Let’s get into it ❤

The Interview

Tell me more about yourself. Likes, dislikes, quirks, etc.

I’ve always been quite partial to the way Georges Guétary, in the film An American in Paris, describes Leslie Caron’s character as a wonderfully multi-faceted woman: enchanting, beautiful, spiritual, exciting, lusty, sweet, shy, old-fashioned, vivacious and modern, yacky, incessant, wild, fun, moody, and happy — I too am multi-faceted; I’m a little bit of everything rolled into one! Same goes for my lifestyle, hobbies, and talents: In addition to being a writer, I am also a professional photographer, graphic designer, and homeschooling mother of three boys.

That’s Adell in a nutshell. However, Adell Ryan is a hubby/wife pseudonym. I am Adell, and he is Ryan. Ryan acts as a sounding board, beta reader, and schedule manager among other imperative things.  He also plays a vital role in making sure my male characters act manly enough.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have written creatively for as long as I can remember. When I was in first grade I won an award for a special character’s story I had shared. This character went on quite the adventure; he dragged himself through a desert, bounced through a giant forest, and rolled around in a plush field of grass. At the end, he found himself quite stuck at the bottom of a lake. Why? Well because he was a golf ball, of course.

I continued to write on-and-off throughout my life but never took it seriously. Then, when I gave birth to my first son, I would write him little poems… I even wrote him a song. The song thing became a tradition, and my next two boys earned their very own as well. These personal songs taught them how to spell their names and always reminded them how much they are loved. I also wrote a short children’s story at one point, but never thought I was much good at it, so it got set aside.

When it came down to writing for real, rather than me seeking out the writing life, the writing life found me. In August of 2017, I was very sick and bedridden for quite some time. Books became my escape and I had a budding love for Paranormal Romance. One of my many book searches during that timeframe led me to Trickery, the first book in the Curse of the Gods series by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington. I read that book and just completely and utterly swooned over the guy characters, then was like “What is this sorcery, and WHERE DO I FIND MORE?!” I got all grabby handy and desperate. Gimmie, gimme, gimme. Soon, I found myself in a Facebook group called Reverse Harem Readers with thousands of other women (and men) who were also obsessed with the genre. A story idea I had thought about in brief six years prior flourished in my mind yet again… this time with a Reverse Harem twist. From there, the story and the characters practically wrote itself.

How long does it take you to write a book?

From first word to publish, books one and two in my current series, Her Reverse Genus, took eight months to write. As I became more knowledgeable and comfortable in the role as writer, I began to see a increase in my speed. Book three took half the time, at only four months to write, and book four is moving along even faster!

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother of three boys, so I base my writing schedule around those things! My most productive hours are in the middle of the day when the boys are finishing up their schoolwork and utilizing those hours for outdoor play or quiet time! However, my hubby (the Ryan in Adell Ryan) and I have also worked out a plan where I get what we call two “full-focus” days a week. He handles all the domestic stuff, and I focus on my writing career! Each writing day is spent logging as many words as I’m capable of. No min or max!

How hard was it to get your books published?

Publishing for the first time is incredibly intimidating. To be honest, there is a lot to do when publishing each book… but there are even more steps when publishing your first book. Not only are you writing and releasing, you are also getting your name out there for the first time, creating a logo and brand, establishing your business, and so much more. Without a step-by-step manual, I had to figure it out on the fly! Talk about a challenge!

Where do you get the ideas for your books?

My ideas come from a plethora of things: music, environment, experiences, desires, people, places, and so much more.

How much research do you put into your writing?

A lot. So. Much. Research. When you’re dealing with the topic of DNA and a contemporary, near-future setting, you need to be extra specific with the scientific verbiage and details as well as understanding what advancements in politics, economy, and science may be realistic. I’ve put more hours into research than I have into the actual time spent writing my Her Reverse Genus series! Then I flipped the script and came up with a fantasy world for my next – top secret – work in progress, and a slew of entirely unique research has come with that as well.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Energize! All the way! I can wake up and do it from morning until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer at night!

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Most definitely word choices and behaviors! I don’t want them speaking or acting like my female characters.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Read, eat, sleep, hike, travel, photography and design, and spend time with my family… among other things!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I don’t have thick skin. Not yet. People judging my work – and the subsequent negative reviews –  can be incredibly debilitating at times, and that judgment is not something I expected going in.

Do you have any suggestions to help someone become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Go for it! But always try to embrace the hard stuff too; the challenges you’ll face — because you will face them. Find the lesson in every step along the way, and always try to “level up” even if you might think you don’t need to. Also, try your hand at writing apps like 4thewords or MyWritingClub to help with speed and motivation.

Are you swooning yet, dolls?

You just can’t resist. Resistant.

So one of my most anticipated books of the year dropped last week. From the moment I saw the cover reveal I couldn’t freaking wait to read this book! I mean who’s shirt is she wearing?! Sadly I wasn’t able to jump right into it as I had some reading obligations to finish before I could get into it but once I did. I was hooked. I seriously love this series. It is so original and the characters are just so swoon-worthy. If you haven’t read book 1, Perfect, or book 2, Broken, stop right here. STOP! Go read those books! They are amazeballs and you won’t be sorry. So are you ready to get into it?! ❤

We rejoin Thessaly and her guys just after they have escape the horror of last book, Broken (see my review here!). Something has happened to Thess in that lab and only Julian, Jax, and Bram have an idea of what it could be. Tobias, just coming back from being MIA to go break it off with his girlfriend, and Thessaly are both completely out of the loop. Thessaly is recovering from the drug that she was given after she and Julian had been captured, a drug that has caused complete memory loss of the entire situation. She is trying to recover from the unknown as well as acclimate to their new environment. Thess and the guys are now in the underground, below Robbie & Kait’s bar, with the resistance. Hundreds of people are fleeing the government as people with certain scores have gone missing. The resistance has grouped together in several different areas to avoid the government takeover. The underground reminds me so much of the Host by Stephanie Meyer. Plus the characters of Jeb (the Host) and Robbie are seriously soulbrothers. Quirky, intelligent, doomsday prepers that you can’t help but fall in love with. In a platonic way of course.

So life in the underground isn’t what I particularly want. I mean I’m thinking, hey they have escaped the horribleness of Zinna and Roux and are potentially safe right now. It’s time to chill right? A time full of swoons, the characters falling deeper in love, and sex ammirite?! Well I do get that. In spades. But I also get a lot of running around. Thess, the guys, as well as the rest of the members of the resistance have to start training in different areas including combat as well as learning more about what their scores and genus mean to them and their futures. They are under a pretty strict schedule and are unable to leave due to the lockdown. We learn a lot more about the genome testing and what scores mean in terms of mating, coupling up, friendships, etc. It’s truly interesting and you can tell that the author did a crap ton of research. It isn’t so science-y (yes, that’s the technical term) that you get lost but it is definitely not all swoons. There is a lot of depth in this book.

I love all the depth, truly I do. But we all know why I’m here. THE SWOONS! This book brings the swoon, the romance, the love, and some definite STEAM. We got my boy Jax who is the embodiment of freaking sex. He brings in a VERY sexy secret this book. I don’t want to spoil it for you but it had me drooling all the damn time. I’m surprised I don’t have literal bites marks imprinted on my bottom lip from biting it so much. That’s how swooned I was. PLUS she has some amaaaazing times with Bram. Gahhh he is so fucking swoony. I can’t. I just can’t. Then once Tobias comes back and all is forgiven we get to find out some interesting sexual stuff about him. Some stuff that makes me VERY excited for book 4. Gahhhhh it’s all sooooo good! I know there are a lot of Julian lovers out there (I am not one of them surprisingly), he’s okay but the other guys are so freaking hot that I usually let him fall by the wayside. Julian has some definite sexy moments. Moments I even found myself enjoying, but also some moments where I was more irritated with him that I ever was with Tobias after he left the group last book. But overall the love factor for me was fire. So much fire. 5/5 hearts. 5/5 fires. That’s a high assed rating! (ARE YOU ONE-CLICK-BUYING YET?!)

I feel like this series just keeps getting better and better. Just when I think it can’t get any better it does. I finished the book last night and felt such a book hangover. The feeling where you drop your kindle and stare aimlessly into the sky because the book was so fucking good you don’t know how you to move on from that moment. Where you want to immediately start all over because you already miss the characters. Like I miss Jax so fucking much it’s ridiculous. He isn’t real Julia, he isn’t real. Oh well. Wanna hear the BEST part of all this. The book ends with your regular ‘to be continued’ then you get to see when the next book is coming out. Now to just count the days….

“Ah, fuck, Darlin’,” Jax pants between stilted, pained breaths. “Damn I’ve wanted you so bad since the moment I laid eyes on ya.” Abandon exudes from his breathy words, and the sound of his voice combined with the fullness of our joining ultimately becomes my undoing.

Jax and Thessaly – Resistant by Adell Ryan

We are back. We are swooning. We are Broken.

There are a lot of stories out there that I am obsessed with. The characters are so amazing that I feel like I know these people. I care about these characters. This series is definitely one of those for me. Broken is the second book in the Her Reverse Genus series by Adell Ryan. The first book is called Perfect (find the review here!) and I love it so much. It’s a book I can just go back and re-read over and over and over. I will also be doing this with this amazing sequel. When I saw the title for this book my immediate thoughts were OMG WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ADELL?! Broken?! Please don’t destroy my loves. Please….

IF YOU HAVEN’T READ BOOK #1 GRAB IT NOW!!!

I was one of the lucky ones that got to beta read this book. Talk about fangirling all over the fucking place. I remember the exact moment I was asked to be a Beta. I was in the car on my way to a wedding in Kentucky and I received the message. Cue fangirl screaming and giggling uncontrollably. You would think I was a young girl talking to her first crush. So freaking stoked.

I started the book and immediately began falling in love again. All these characters are so well written that I feel like they are friends. It’s like coming back to Hogwarts, you know it’s home. Plus, I was immediately in full swoon mode over Jax. That man… Whew. He’s mine ladies….BACK OFF 😉 & Tobias… Gah he is so swoony. Strong silent types man. I love em. Then Bram with their friendship/blooming love. Last but not least our sexy italian man, Julian. Back with Thess and the guys and back in love.

Thess is completely distressed over the events from the end of the last book. Her dad had been attacked and was badly hurt, possibly dead, and her mother was missing. She has come out of her depression phase thanks to Tobias and his errr magical fingers. #Swoon She realizes that the guys were really worried about her and she isn’t going to accomplish anything by moping around. She has had her time to cope, it’s time to be kickass Thess again. Her and the guys just have to come up with a plan and put it into action. The evil Zinna has framed Thess for the attack on her father and has an alert out for her making it almost impossible for her to be seen in public.

Another situation that Thess is trying to figure out is her relationship with the guys. She still isn’t totally sure how this whole thing is going to work with her and 3 guys. Aren’t they going to get jealous? How is she going to juggle them all? How can she deal with experiencing such happy things as her relationship with each of them develops when so much bad is happening in her life? Although the last book is truly a ‘medium burn’ there isn’t much sexy time for Thess and the guys. The relationship building in Perfect is amazing. Seriously great. I am totally in love with these guys and now I’m ready to get to the business. Be in love with them Thess! LET’S GET IT ON! Well, you’ll be happy to hear that shit really heats up in Broken. Like almost immediately we are in full swoon mode with some SUPER sexy scenes. What else does this mean?! MORE relationship development between Thess and the guys! We get to learn more about their stories and how they came to be on the run. We get to fall in love with the guys with Thess. I love this about the series. The love doesn’t feel like insta-love. Granted the time frame isn’t incredibly long but we don’t go from ‘hi what’s your name?’ to ‘You are the love of my life I will die without you’. There is a more natural buildup in the relationships and it’s amazing.

Another element of the first book we get to explore at a deeper level is the government and their involvement in their blood draw/DNA study. We’ve seen that the people doing this aren’t afraid to snatch people out of their homes, force them to participate in the blood draw, and even use violence to influence rule breakers to comply. Something you wouldn’t expect from those who have been entrusted to protect us. We get to see a lot more of this in the capture and kidnapping of Thess’s mother as well as NABs continuation of seeking Thess and vilifying her. Plus a lot more stuff that I wouldn’t want to spoil for you. But it’s good. & horrifying. & will be sure to piss you off…

Perfect was amazing. Really and truly amazing. Broken? Even freaking better. Out of the two Broken is definitely my favorite. I seriously can’t wait for the 3rd book and I will be tirelessly stalking Adell Ryan until she releases it. All the characters are so amazingly in-depth and the story/world building is so perfect that I have been dealing with serious book hangover since I finished it. I spent my time swooning, giggling like a school girl, laughing out loud, and wanting to scream and cry. The story is so immersive you can’t help but become emotionally attached. This is a definite must read. It’s made for contemporary romance lovers. It’s made for sci-fi/paranormal romance lovers. Honestly, amazingly written stories are made for everyone. Now leave me alone so I can get back to swooning over Jax ❤

Keep swooning dolls! 😘
