Adell Ryan: Author Spotlight

I have had the opportunity to interview yet ANOTHER amazing author ❤ Adell Ryan’s book Perfect in Her Reverse Genus series was one of my first few books I read in the reverse harem genre. I loved it so much that it became an obsession. I have read this book so many times ❤ Book 2, Broken, and Book 3, Resistant, are even more freaking amazing. Her writing is soooooo good. Let’s get into it ❤

The Interview

Tell me more about yourself. Likes, dislikes, quirks, etc.

I’ve always been quite partial to the way Georges Guétary, in the film An American in Paris, describes Leslie Caron’s character as a wonderfully multi-faceted woman: enchanting, beautiful, spiritual, exciting, lusty, sweet, shy, old-fashioned, vivacious and modern, yacky, incessant, wild, fun, moody, and happy — I too am multi-faceted; I’m a little bit of everything rolled into one! Same goes for my lifestyle, hobbies, and talents: In addition to being a writer, I am also a professional photographer, graphic designer, and homeschooling mother of three boys.

That’s Adell in a nutshell. However, Adell Ryan is a hubby/wife pseudonym. I am Adell, and he is Ryan. Ryan acts as a sounding board, beta reader, and schedule manager among other imperative things.  He also plays a vital role in making sure my male characters act manly enough.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have written creatively for as long as I can remember. When I was in first grade I won an award for a special character’s story I had shared. This character went on quite the adventure; he dragged himself through a desert, bounced through a giant forest, and rolled around in a plush field of grass. At the end, he found himself quite stuck at the bottom of a lake. Why? Well because he was a golf ball, of course.

I continued to write on-and-off throughout my life but never took it seriously. Then, when I gave birth to my first son, I would write him little poems… I even wrote him a song. The song thing became a tradition, and my next two boys earned their very own as well. These personal songs taught them how to spell their names and always reminded them how much they are loved. I also wrote a short children’s story at one point, but never thought I was much good at it, so it got set aside.

When it came down to writing for real, rather than me seeking out the writing life, the writing life found me. In August of 2017, I was very sick and bedridden for quite some time. Books became my escape and I had a budding love for Paranormal Romance. One of my many book searches during that timeframe led me to Trickery, the first book in the Curse of the Gods series by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington. I read that book and just completely and utterly swooned over the guy characters, then was like “What is this sorcery, and WHERE DO I FIND MORE?!” I got all grabby handy and desperate. Gimmie, gimme, gimme. Soon, I found myself in a Facebook group called Reverse Harem Readers with thousands of other women (and men) who were also obsessed with the genre. A story idea I had thought about in brief six years prior flourished in my mind yet again… this time with a Reverse Harem twist. From there, the story and the characters practically wrote itself.

How long does it take you to write a book?

From first word to publish, books one and two in my current series, Her Reverse Genus, took eight months to write. As I became more knowledgeable and comfortable in the role as writer, I began to see a increase in my speed. Book three took half the time, at only four months to write, and book four is moving along even faster!

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother of three boys, so I base my writing schedule around those things! My most productive hours are in the middle of the day when the boys are finishing up their schoolwork and utilizing those hours for outdoor play or quiet time! However, my hubby (the Ryan in Adell Ryan) and I have also worked out a plan where I get what we call two “full-focus” days a week. He handles all the domestic stuff, and I focus on my writing career! Each writing day is spent logging as many words as I’m capable of. No min or max!

How hard was it to get your books published?

Publishing for the first time is incredibly intimidating. To be honest, there is a lot to do when publishing each book… but there are even more steps when publishing your first book. Not only are you writing and releasing, you are also getting your name out there for the first time, creating a logo and brand, establishing your business, and so much more. Without a step-by-step manual, I had to figure it out on the fly! Talk about a challenge!

Where do you get the ideas for your books?

My ideas come from a plethora of things: music, environment, experiences, desires, people, places, and so much more.

How much research do you put into your writing?

A lot. So. Much. Research. When you’re dealing with the topic of DNA and a contemporary, near-future setting, you need to be extra specific with the scientific verbiage and details as well as understanding what advancements in politics, economy, and science may be realistic. I’ve put more hours into research than I have into the actual time spent writing my Her Reverse Genus series! Then I flipped the script and came up with a fantasy world for my next – top secret – work in progress, and a slew of entirely unique research has come with that as well.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Energize! All the way! I can wake up and do it from morning until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer at night!

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Most definitely word choices and behaviors! I don’t want them speaking or acting like my female characters.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Read, eat, sleep, hike, travel, photography and design, and spend time with my family… among other things!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I don’t have thick skin. Not yet. People judging my work – and the subsequent negative reviews –  can be incredibly debilitating at times, and that judgment is not something I expected going in.

Do you have any suggestions to help someone become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Go for it! But always try to embrace the hard stuff too; the challenges you’ll face — because you will face them. Find the lesson in every step along the way, and always try to “level up” even if you might think you don’t need to. Also, try your hand at writing apps like 4thewords or MyWritingClub to help with speed and motivation.

Serena Akeroyd: Author Spotlight [Giveaway!]

I have had the privilege to interview another amazing author. This woman is a writing wizard. Everything she writes is seriously amazing. I love it all. You can see my reviews of some of her work below. Her name is Serena Akeroyd and she writes some super steamy books that don’t fade to black (who wants that?!). She has amazing story-building skills and creates characters that you just can’t help but fall in love with. ❤

Tell me more about yourself. Likes, dislikes, quirks, etc.

I’m such a boring person, Julia. Seriously. It’s depressing, lol. My life is literally revolved around my writing and my books. Oh, and don’t forget my dog! 😍 His name is Trev, and he’s got more attitude than a Kardashian. 😉

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about 18, I first picked up a Harlequin book from a library. I devoured about ten of them in a week and thought, holy crap, I need to write like this. It seriously went from there, and I devoured everything and anything Harlequin. I have about 2000 books in my backroom, 🤦‍♂️, and from there, it went to erotica, and then menage! My first ever menage was a Maya Banks novel. 😋 When I read that, wow, it was like a hurricane to my brain. I knew I wanted to write poly because I connected with it so hardddd.

Do you have a pen name? If so, what made you decide to do that?

I used one because I thought all the best authors used them! 😂 Talk about bowing to peer pressure. Well, of the self-imposed variety.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It can take me anything from three days to a month, story depending. A Quintessence book can take about a week. The story is developed to the point where I have a lot going on. At the moment, I’m struggling with one of the stories as I’m trying to fight where it’s going. I average about ten thousand words a day.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

My schedule is impossible to schedule. 😋 I sleep mostly through the day and am awake at night. I could be writing at 5am and 5pm, then sleep for fourteen hours to start again. Sleep is one of my biggest issues. I have a crappy sleep routine.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

That my characters drive me to the point where I go completely off script. I’m scheduled to write a few books in the upcoming months, and yet, I’m writing none of them at the minute. 🤦‍♂️ A story popped into my head and I have no choice but to follow its lead!

How hard was it to get your books published?

I actually had a few publishers interested in my earlier books, but then I went the self-publishing route which is sooo much easier.

Where do you get the ideas for your books?

From anywhere and everywhere. I tend to find my story roots in a question. Like why did someone do this? Why wouldn’t they? Etc. It’s pretty random. My story concepts can stir from a single line and boom. There’s a book. My brain is nuts.

How much research do you put into your writing?

A shit ton! OMG, so much. It depends on the story, though. Dare You To Love Me required a ton because I’m British so never went to American High School. I had to learn everything and it went through so many editors to make sure it was authentic. Then Hotter than Hades was packed with Greek mythology. I had so much to learn but I love research!

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

My first one, I was around 21.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Very little. 😂 I’m reading or watching TV, walking my dog or trying to persuade myself to do yoga. I told you already-I’m super boring. 😂

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That people connect with my work. It’s a dream come true to know that people like my stories. That people follow my series for more. It’s a revelation.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I think I’m coming up toward fifty. My favorite? Impossible to say. 😉

Do you have any suggestions to help someone become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Read. Just read. Seriously. Read more. Then some more. Get a KU subscription, see what’s popular, and go where the market leads you but ALWAYS stick to your guns and your own voice. Write your story the way you want, and hold fast. ♥

Who is your author idol?

Linda Howard. I love her early books. Someone compared me to her the other day and I about sobbed.
Linda Howard. I love her early books. Someone compared me to her the other day and I about sobbed.

Which book/series was the most fun to write?

Five Points was one of the funniest series because I was totally enthralled with the characters. Finn in Screw You and Screw Me had me enraptured from the start. That’s always a good sign. I wrote that duet in two weeks. I’ve never written anything so quickly in my life.

Which book/series was the hardest to write?

I’d say The TriAlpha Chronicles because it was long, in-depth, and so convoluted plot-wise for me that it was like weaving a tapestry. I loved it though but it was difficult because each book was super long and I had to get each one ready every month for half a year!

What kinds of books do you like to read?! What books are on your TBR?

I’m currently in an MC and Mafia phase. I’m addicted to the mobsters. 😂 I just devoured a crap ton of Hayley Faiman books.

I am way past fangirling! Serena is freaking amazing. She is a writing machine. Somehow she is able to put books out at such a fast pace and they are freaking amazing. She is such a kind soul and super interactive with her readers. If you aren’t swooned by her yet you are crazy!

Hey Arizona Tape, I want more of these gamers!

As you may know I am a gamer. I used to liken myself to a closet nerd but i don’t think I’m in that closet anymore. As I’ve gotten older a decided that i don’t particularly give a fuck what people think of me I have let my freak flag fly. This includes my obsession with Harry Potter, smutty romance books, Battlestar Gallactica, and video games. I spend a lot of time playing video games. Because they are amazing. Especially Skyrim. I am OBSESSED with Skyrim. So when I see this reverse harem book about gamers?! Well you know I had to grab it. Shall we get into it? ❤

This book has gone through some name/cover changes so you may have seen it as “Mary F*cking Christmas” and “Mary Had A Little Harem”. No matter what the title is it’s gold. I am guessing the title changes have something to do with Amazon and their crackdown on everything sexy in terms of advertising. Ugh. I’d love to say fight the power but there is no fighting the ‘Zon. Oh well. This book features Mary who is single and ready to mingle. Kind of. She is on the elevator up to her apartment when this asshole decides to get in with her. Okay, so you are probably like that doesn’t seem like a very asshole thing to do… Well this guy has a giant ass tree. A real Christmas tree. So Mary is naturally annoyed by this stranger and even more pissed off when she realizes he is very attractive. Ugh. Hot nerds. Then when she decides to throw some flirty suggestive comments at him and he doesn’t seem interested? Well now he is back to asshole 1. Square asshole. Okay that doesn’t work, square 1.

So Mary ditches the zero and goes back up to her apartment. Cue her frustration after finding that the mailman has once again but mail in her box that doesn’t belong to her. A quick run to her elderly neighbors house and she’ll be back to her apartment. She was just deciding to shove them under the door when it opens. Who is at the door? Not Mrs. Smithfield. Nope. The asshole/hot nerdy guy. I am immediately swooned by their banter. They immediately meet each other with hostility and disdain and yet the both share an attractive for one another. So what does the stranger’s wonderful grandmother suggest? That Mary goes out with him. Cue my giggling and dying of swoons. Louis jumps on the idea deciding to torture her and Mary unhappily agrees.

Louis shows up to their date in a very interesting outfit. One that immediately sets Mary on edge but she decides to suffer through the date anyway. They find during their date that they have a lot more in common that they thought possible. They both find themselves crushing on the other. Again, their banter is fucking adorable. I just want to listen to them tease and flirt with each other for hours. It’s so fucking cute. It also leads to a second date. Where Mary meets some of Louis’s friends, Sam and Noel. How is it possible for so many hot nerds to hang out with each other? I mean if these are the type of guys you find at these cosplay events I need to sign my ass up. For educational purposes of course. That and I want to dress up like a Nightingale from Skyrim…

Mary soon realizes that these gamers are quite what she thought they were and she might not have to choose between Louis, or Sam, or Noel… or maybe even this Nico character she has yet to meet. Intrigued by these men she becomes entrenched in their lives watching them game and hang out, finding herself falling for all of them. Then when she meets Nico, well that throws another twist into her no longer typical world. (Sidenote: I first read a scene with Mary and Nico in the Between the Sheets anthology and it is HOT HOT HOT).

This book is a standalone (sadly – I WANT MORE!) but it is super amazing. I love all the characters so much and there are some really sexy scenes. The relationship development between the characters is so effing swoony. Mary is sarcastic and hilarious but isn’t as surface level as she appears. I love the interactions between the characters and I absolutely LOVED her interactions with Nico. Sign me up to read more of Arizona Tape’s books because I am sold. Humor, swoons, and steam. What more could I ask for?!

Are you ready to swoon with me dolls?! ❤

Sweet About Me is deliciously sexy

I wish that I had all the time in the world to just read and listen to books. There is just so much stuff that overtakes our lives. Kids, family, work, sports, TV, friends, movies, video games, etc. I want to be able to do all the things but there just isn’t enough time! This hectic lifestyle leaves me little time to read and listen to audiobooks. My work has even gotten to complicated to be able to listen to audiobooks all day as I am constantly interrupted by phone calls. Oh well. Life goes on. When I’m old and retired I’ll spend all my time listening and reading to my smut 😉 Recently though I was able to listen to a really good book. It was a light standalone that I was able to listen to on a leisurely Sunday. Let’s get into it ❤

Find it here on Amazon!!

Are you drooling over that cover?! I know I am ❤ So this book is about a woman, Saffron, who owns her own bakery, Sugar & Spice. Saffron meets up with her friends one night and is introduced to a very gorgeous man named Cal by one of her close friends Daniel. He seems to be exactly her type but she doesn’t want to step on Daniels toes and risk his friendship with his new co-worker. As Cal becomes more integrated into their group of friend’s Saffron can’t seem to keep her mind off the man. Especially when he starts dropping into her bakery on his own.

Cal’s apparent interest in Saffron has not gone unnoticed by her friend Daniel. Daniel warns Saffron to stay away from Cal under the guise that he doesn’t want her to get hurt. I mean in my world that is the go ahead. Someone tells me not to do something so now I obviously have to do it. Plus Saffron is a grown as woman and can make her own decisions, especially when they come to drop dead sexy men. When things begin heating up between Saffron and Cal he puts things to a stop before they can go any farther. Why? Because he wants to do this right, dinner, flowers, a real date. Talk about freaking swoons. #MarryMeCal

When the night of Cal and Saffron’s date comes she is thrown for a loop. This isn’t a typical date as there is someone at their table. His name is Evan and he is Cal’s brother. What the what?! Well Cal and Evan have a bit of a kink. A kink that I am totally down for. But, will Saffron be down for it? & how will she deal with Daniel and his unhappiness about her relationship with Cal?

This book was super cute and super hot. I loved Laura Greenwood’s writing style and that the Audiobook narrator was british. #Swoon. This book is a standalone in a series. The other books in the series are about other characters so it can be read all on it’s own or you can binge the whole series. Either way you are in for a deliciously sexy treat ❤

Swoon with me dolls ❤

Finding my Prince(s) Charming, Perry and her Princes.

I have been reading a series off and on for a couple of months. It’s one I didn’t want to read straight through because I was enjoying it so much that I didn’t want it to end. Alas, all good things must come to an end but a wonderful end they came to. I, of course, am speaking of Serena Akeroyd’s Kingdom of Veronia series. Let’s get into it.

Grab book 1 here!

We have our main character, Perry, an American scientist that has accepted a position in the Veronian government to discover the cause of their water crisis. Her bestie, George, is a prince of Veronia and is accompanying her back to his home. Sure, he knows she is the best woman for the job but he also has other plans for her in mind. Perry has been the object of his eye for quite sometime but he hasn’t wanted to make a move and risk ruining something that could be amazing. See, George has a bit of a secret kink. He is most turned on when he is able to share a woman with his brother, Edward. Edward is next in line to be King and recently widowed. George and he haven’t shared a woman since their youth, will he be down to get back into the sexual preference of their past?

Men in Veronia aren’t like American men and Perry can’t find it in her to complain. She has had a bit of a crush on George for years but has felt they were stuck in the friend zone. She is ready to prove herself as a scientist during her time in Veronia, that is until things start heating up. The first night Perry feels abandoned when George is forced to smooze diplomats and she meets a wonderfully attractive man. It is clear that Xavier is not a fan of these fancy shindigs and discovers Perry crouching down playing a game on her phone. He is tickled by her complete lack of respect for the environment she has found herself in and finds a companion in her whilst they escape the dreary party for a walk in the garden.

Will Perry’s blooming relationship with Xavier, George and Edward’s cousin, ruin George’s plans to make Perry the object of he and his brother’s eyes? Will Edward be accepting of jumping back into the unusual relationships he and his brother held with women in their younger days? Will Veronia be accepting of this clumsy American girl and her relationships with the princes and duke?

I loved this series so much. I found Perry so easy to relate to and I could not stop swooning over her men. The story held so much heat and action when I was reading I could not put the books down. The story was so gripping I enjoyed it just as much as I did the swoon which is unusual for me. As I’ve said before, I’m more of a lots of swoon/steamy and a bit of story kinda girl. I cannot wait to hear more from Perry and the guys in the upcoming CROSSOVER in Serena Akeroyd’s other series Quintessence. It’s going to be so fucking amazing to see Sascha and her men interact with these royals once Sean comes out.

What are you waiting for, swoon with me!

Get ready for the steam. Screw You. Screw Me.

There is this author named Serena Akeroyd. She is seriously a writing goddess. A wizard of words if you will. Everything she writes is seriously gold. She could write obituaries and I would read every single one. I have read several of her books and have never been disappointed so when she came out with a new series that isn’t reverse harem *gasp* I knew I needed to get it multiple guys or not. Let’s get into this amaaaaazingly dark and steamy contemporary romance. But let’s get something straight first… Finn is MINE ❤ *wipes away drool*

Find book 1, Screw You, here on Amazon!

These books are about a woman name Aoife (pronounced Ee-fah) who owns a bakery that a large company is trying to buy out. Being a fiery Irish woman she has refused all attempts out of principle and respect to her mom’s memory. That is until the sexiest man on earth walks in her door, Finn. ❤️ Finn is seriously the love of my life. I love me some bad boys and he fits this criteria perfectly. He swoops in determined to have Aoife. She’s gorgeous, thick, Irish, and everything he has every wanted in a woman. He can’t resist her charms and he knows that he has to get her to give up her place but he also knows he has to have her. He just doesn’t know if one will stop the other.

Finn and Aoife’s relationship is fucking electric. I mean their attraction to each other… I’m swooning just thinking about it. I love Irish guys. Seriously if I could get an Irish man to talk to me all day. Done. I’d be done. I try to get my husband to talk Irish to me. Sometimes he tries. Most of the time he tells me to stop being a weirdo. I need Serena to get this on audio and find the sexiest sounding Irish man in the world to narrate it. Done. I’d be done.

Okay, okay. Back to the story, because its a really good one. I just want to lick Finn’s freaking face. I’ll calm down. So Finn is part of an Irish gang called the Five Points. It is lead by his pseudo father who is an absolute nutcase. Like a nutcase with a heart of gold. Finn isn’t the kneecapping kinda Irish gangster though, more like behind the scenes business kinda gangster. So he is super loaded. Not only Irish. Not only a bad boy. Not only sexy as all hell. Rich. Dear lord save us all. Aoife was raised to fear the Five Points. They rule the city. They are scary as hell but keep shit in line. She never thought she’d end up with a Points man. Until Finn that is. I mean did you read all that. Danger smanger. I want me some Finn in my life. The danger just makes him all the more sexy I swear ❤

If I haven’t sold you yet I don’t know what is wrong with you. Who doesn’t love a bad boy?!?!?! I mean, sure, you don’t marry them. That would never turn out well. BUT these are the guys you have the high school, college, early twenties flings with. They are dark, dirty, and fuuuucking hot as hell. I mean even your good boys are a bit bad. So are you ready for some Finn in your life?!

Are you swooning with me? ❤

“Do you want a lemonade?” Markus asked as we wandered up to a vending cart.

“Sure,” I said with a smile.

Markus was so courteous. He actually made the effort to think of my needs and that earned him an enormous amount of brownie points in my book.

He bought one for me and one for himself. We kept walking until we came up to a secluded area with a little bridge. Markus had a giddy smile on his face and his cocoa-colored eyes sparkled with mischief.

“What?” I laughed and stared at him.

“Nothing.” He shook his head but continued to hold my gaze.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked in a hushed voice.

Markus took a step closer to me. We were almost nose to nose. I could feel his body heat and smell the scent of his masculinity as it enveloped me.

“I am thinking…” he trailed off, keeping me in excruciating suspense. The edges of his lips curled into a handsome smile that melted me from the inside out. “How much I want to kiss you right now.”

“What’s stopping you then?” I asked and boldly kept his gaze locked with mine.

Markus chuckled and gave me a smile filled with a depth of admiration as big as the ocean. He took my head in his hands and pulled me gently closer to him. He softly pressed his lips to mine.

I was hit with an electric jolt of pleasure. I was instantly ignited with a flame of desire that was hard to resist. It only intensified, the more fervently Markus kissed me. The sensation spread through my veins like wildfire.

I melted into his arms and moaned out quietly. When Markus pulled away a few seconds later, the touch of his lips on mine left a lingering sensation that had me craving more.

I gave him a sideways grin. “Are you good at everything?”

Markus’s eyes twinkled and he gave me an amused smile. “Is that your way of telling me that you enjoyed the kiss?”

“That’s an understatement,” I whispered as I seductively trailed the outline of his abs through his shirt with the tip of my index finger.

In reality, shivers of pleasure had made me tremble and tingle from head to toe.
