There is something about dark romance books that is just so… Swoon. Gahhhh I haven’t read a huge amount but I feel like I’m about to dive into more. My recent experience in the realm of dark romance is of course reverse harem. Restless Spirit by Briana Michaels is the first book in the Hell Hounds Harem series and I am fucking obsessed. I just finished the books and after reading the last line I said “ohhhhh fuuuuck” then furiously started downloading book two. Let’s. Get. Into. It.
Everly is a ghost trapped in the human world where no one can see or hear her. She spends all her time moving from town to town searching for who knows what and overall living a sad and lonely existence. The only company she has is the malanum. These terrifying creatures are dead, but not the same kinda dead Everly is, these are spirits that turned dark and they really want to do the same to her. She spends all her time constantly on the lookout for these dark spirits. In constant fear that they will catch her and turn her into one of them. She also has the fear that the longer she spends as a ghost that she will turn into a malanum organically.
She was killed 5 years ago in New Orleans and of course it was Halloween. The sucky thing about being a ghost is that what you die in is what you are stuck in. Sadly, Everly died on Halloween so she is stuck in her Voodoo Priestess costume which was cool and first but she is seriously getting tired of the skeleton makeup, corset, tophat, and cane that she is stuck carrying around. Sure she looks like a badass but what’s the point if she can’t be seen. This night though is Halloween so she might as well live it up in her costume and head out to dance at one of the bars in town. Not a whole lot else to do if you are a ghost, right?
Dancing at the Black Abbey club is going as every other night has gone in her lonely ghost existence, she is dancing like no one is watching because no one really is watching. Until someone might be. Much to her suprise and disbelief there is a very attractive man and he seems to see her. She knows he has to see her when he waves her over. Maybe Everly’s lonely existence isn’t going to be so lonely anymore? Especially since Jack can touch her. Going 5 years as a ghost without being touched, then all of a sudden this hot assed guy can not only see but touch her? Well let’s just say that A LOT of touching commences… A lot.
Jack and Everly run into some issues with the malanum which inconveniently interrupts round 2 of their sexy time. Ugh. Jack explains that he is a Hell Hound and his job is to force the malanum back into Hell. Obviously this is a very tempting job to Everly as it means she won’t be alone anymore and she can kill some of the horrid creatures that have been chasing her for five long years. A trip to Hell and help from the devil and she is a Hell Hound. Plus she is finally whole which means no more Halloween costume. Shit is finally going well. Jack is head over heels for her and he is taking her to meet his pack. The reception she receives isn’t exactly what she was expecting. Jack’s pack’s farmhouse feels a lot like home and all the guys seem to already know her, including Jack. She is greeted by a sexy swoonworthy kiss from one of the guys, Tanner. Kalen, Eli, and Tanner are calling her Sara and seem to know everything about her, except what happened to her five years ago. What the fuck is happening? Is this all a trick? Should she trust these people that work for the devil? Is she truly this Sara person?
I love love loved this book. I did not want to stop reading it and this last week at work was a struggle because I stayed up ways to late reading and therefore need a lot of coffee to get through the work day. When I started the book I was a little leery because it seemed A LOT like the books by Kristy Cunning, the first being Four Psychos (see my review here). We have a ghost who doesn’t know her name, finds out she has a pseudo relationship with the devil, finds men that she has had a past life with that she doesn’t remember, and the guys have reapersish jobs. There are a lot of similarities at the beginning but once the book starts going the similarities disappear. These books really are nothing alike in terms of story development, character personalities, etc. The guys are HOT HOT HOT. Like I love dark guys with dark souls. There is just something soooo freaking sexy about bad boys and these boys are all bad. Sexy bad.
Sara (aka Everly) is such a badass. I love her a lot. She doesn’t just fall head over heels for these guys because she is finally seen. Sure she feels the attraction but she is very skeptical of them and their stories at first. But as the story progresses and she begins to remember her old like and slowly fall in love and trust these guys again. Whew. It is swoony. Plus the guys are all so dark, sexy, and amazing. I love it. I, of course, am immediately obsessed with Kalen who appears to be the aloof asshole but turns out to be her amazing, protective wolf. Really I love them all. I’m terrified for the story to end because I don’t want to lose these characters and this is only the first book… Oh lord. Well come on, I have to have sold you on this by now. Swoon with me! ❤
