Sometimes I go through a bit of a YA (young audience) kick. I want something swoony but maybe less raunchy. A favorite YA author of mine is Amy A. Bartol, and the first series I read by her is the Kricket series. I love this series. Love it. It’s a YA Sci-fi Romance series that has lots of ups and downs. Let’s get into it.
How gorgeous is this cover?! Ahhh I love it.
So our main character, and cover girl, is Kricket. What an amazing name. She is this gorgeous 6 foot tall beauty with blonde hair and violet eyes. She looks like a freaking super model. Sadly, she doesn’t live the life of a super model. In and out of foster homes for as long as she can remember, Kricket began living on the street when it all became too much. A lot of the foster homes she was placed in were not friendly places. She was treated very poorly, abused, and used as a means for a paycheck. Now Kricket finally has a place to call her own. An apartment she is renting with her friend that she met through the foster child system, Bridget. She has almost aged out of the foster system and just needs to lay low until she turns 18. Once she has turned 18 she will be free. No more hiding, she can go to school, she can get a real job where she doesn’t have to be paid under the table. Everything will be perfect.
With perfection in reach things of course start to go awry for Kricket. While taking the train home from work three very attractive, very tall, and very buff guys with black hair and tribal tattoos seem to have their violet eyes on her. Terrified that they work for social services she attempts to ignore them. Much to her dismay they come up to her and know her name. “Ah, Kricket, I’ve found you”. What. The. Actual. Fuck. The guys, with the leader being Trey, are convinced that she is the ‘Kricket’ they are looking for and they must take her back to Ethar because she has to face her family and pay for her crimes. Deciding that these guys are completely crazy she attempts to escape, and when that doesn’t work she pulls out her handy dandy pepper spray and blasts their asses giving her an opportunity to bust ass off the train and away from the crazy hot guys. Crazy hot? Pretty sure it’s both crazy hot as well as crazy and hot 😂
Freaking the fuck out Kricket races home to find her roommate preparing to leave for a weekend away with her boyfriend. She explains the insane situation but insists her friends still goes. Cause you know, friendship right?! A lot tougher than me.. She takes some time to clear her head and catch some sleep before her 2nd job, bartending at the bar downstairs. Luckily for her the bar is slammed with customers, aka more tips. She is working away when a group of three enormous blonde-haired men come up to her. What is with all the freaking giants suddenly appearing in her life? These guys have the exact same tribal tattoos which leads her into an immediate panic. Of course, the leader of this trio, Kyon, knows her name as well. He has the exact shade of hair as her, knows her freaky secret that her hair grows back immediately after cutting it, and also claims she is from Ethar. She is completely convinced that this is some kind of joke and that these giants must be friends with Trey and his group. She realizes that this may not be true as Kyon is furious that Trey is also looking for her. Kricket decides to get off the crazy train and is able to get away from Kyon too with the help of the bouncer of the bar and a shot gun. No biggie…
Kricket’s escape is short lived as she is taken by Trey and his group and held prisoner as they make their way to Ethar. Ethar which happens to be another freaking planet that they are able to get to via portal. Holy shit ball sandwich batman. This is cray cray. Kricket is transported to this amazing world with multiple moons, a crazy assortment of wild creatures, as well as crazy off-world politics. Her parents are from enemy clans and their love was absolutely forbidden. How Romeo and Juliet. Well unlike Romeo and Juliet, her parents are able to escape their horrid clans and take up refuge on her. Then of course die of some menial earth disease because their immune systems weren’t built for life on earth. A la War of the Worlds aliens. Disease and bacteria. That’s what’ll save us from aliens. This is how Kricket ended up in the foster care system and where she is at today.
The Rafe clan, or her father’s clan, of black haired and violet-eyed people believe that she belongs with them but must pay for her crime of desertion. Because you know, as an infant she made the very educated choice to abandon her home planet for Earth… Right…. Well the Alameeda clan, or her mother’s clan, of blonde-haired and blue-eyed people believe that she belongs with them. Of course they do. The women in the Alameeda clans are gifted and are seen as royalty. She has been promised to marry Kyon who is kinda a dick, albeit a very sexy dick. So of course, I am in love with him. Jeeze, don’t act like you didn’t see this coming…
Kricket’s time in Ethar is amazing, horrifying, and completely crazy. I know what you are thinking, another book about a girl being abducted by a guy and falling in love with him. Well you are right. Buuuut this book is still so freaking good. Trey is a freaking swoonfest and his two friends, Jax and Wayra, are hilarious and adorable. I truly fall in love with all three of these guys. Kricket finally gets to feel like what it means to have family. Even if the circumstances are weird. Kricket is feisty and absolutely hilarious. She has to deal with a lot of crazy shit and somehow still keeps her head. This is YA so the romance is more swoony than dirty. There are definitely some steamy scenes but they aren’t as raunchy as your typical romance book. I definitely recommend this to all my swooners. I have read and reread and reread again this series so many times. The books are great, the audiobooks are great, it’s all great.
Come on, won’t you swoon with me? ❤
